Be an App Developer!

App Developers are in high demand worldwide & so are the salaries.....

These days there’s an app for everything. There’s an app for hailing taxis, booking movie tickets, reserving a hotel room, banking, grocery shopping and even planning overseas education! (If you haven’t already downloaded STORM app you should do so now! It allows you to browse thousands of courses, look for scholarships, connects you with current students studying abroad and the experts. More details here.)

Apps have truly revolutionised the economy and the way in which we go about our daily life. Some of the world’s biggest and richest companies are app-based businesses, rather than brick and mortar based ones. Take for example Uber and Airbnb, the former is a taxi company that doesn’t own any taxis and the latter is a hotel that doesn’t have any rooms of its own. This didn’t hold back these companies from amassing a combined revenue of US$4 billion in 2018 from operations in the United States alone!

There is serious money to be made by migrating the business to apps, as this offers customers convenience and also reduces overheads for businesses. It’s no wonder then that the demand for app developers is soaring, as is their pay. In the United States alone, app developers make around $84,000 (approx. INR 60 lakhs). Developers in the UK, Australia and Canada earn around the same figure. There is, of course, nothing stopping you from launching your app and becoming the next millionaire or quite possibly even the billionaire like the founders of Instagram, WhatsApp and Snapchat!

App developers have a strong command of programming languages like Java and C++ and also an understanding of business principles and market conditions. To equip aspiring app developers with these skills and competencies, many universities around the world have developed bespoke programmes specialising in app development.

Some of the leading institutions you could study at are:

  • Federation University in Australia
  • The University of the West of Scotland in the UK
  • Northumbria University, also in the UK
