How to find accommodation as an international student?

Congratulations on being accepted by the university of your choice. Or if you’re yet to apply, we hope your application is successful. While everybody takes application and visa processes seriously (and rightly so), most neglect the obvious – ie finding apt accommodation, often leaving it to the last moment. Not only does this cause last-minute panic, but you may end up missing early bird offers and find that the best housing options have already been sold out.

In this blog, we will help you navigate the intricacies associated with finding an accommodation.

Consider university accommodation

Most universities offer accommodation on-site. These come in all shapes and sizes and cater to different budgets. Don’t forget to apply early as university accommodations tend to be very popular and usually have strict deadlines. You won’t be able to apply for a place even if you miss the deadline by a day!

While campus accommodation might be slightly more expensive than private, off-campus accommodation, it is still totally worth it. You get to live with students from a range of different countries studying a myriad of different subjects. Moreover, university accommodation is inclusive of bills and is regularly serviced by cleaning staff. You also have tutors, advisers and security staff on site.

Off-campus accommodation

If you are considering off-campus accommodation, that’s still a good choice. You get to live independently, after all. The best place to start looking for housing outside university is actually the university’s website. Most universities run their own letting agencies, often in partnership with other universities and have a database of flats and houses exclusively for students.

If you’re not happy with these options, you can also choose to live in private student halls or rent a place from private landlords. Your university will still help you with this.
