Is it Expensive Studying in the UK?

Is studying in the UK really Expensive?

Choosing to study in the UK is undoubtedly a good choice. The country is a renowned seat of higher education and research; in fact, 95 British universities feature in Time Higher Education’s ranking of world’s best universities (THE 2018). The United Kingdom is especially known for its business, law and finance programmes and for its research prowess in the sciences and technology.

I can hear you think—‘UK is a great choice but must be expensive!’  Will it cost the earth to study there? Well, surprisingly the answer is No. Programmes in the UK are usually shorter than in other countries. So, you can earn that bachelor’s degree in 3 years and a master’s degree in just one. This will mean you wouldn’t have to budget for tuition and living expenses for an additional year of study. Moreover, where the programmes have an additional year in the UG or PG levels, this is usually spent doing a paid internship.

Moreover, UK universities tend to charger lower tuition fees than universities in other countries popular among international students. Undergraduate programmes typically cost between £7,000 to £12,000 a year and master’s programmes cost £8,000 to £13,000 for the whole programme.

This is competitively priced tuition fee and is equally matched by generous scholarships and tuition fee bursaries. Scholarships for both undergraduate and postgraduate students are in the range of £1,000 to £3,000 per year. Moreover, most universities tend to offer tuition fees discounts as well. So, if you pay all of your first year’s tuition fees at once, you could be set to receive a discount of £500 to £1,500! These are exclusive early bird bursaries you could avail if you make your initial deposit before the advertised deadline.

Naturally, scholarships vary from university to university and from course to course. Depending on your academic and non-academic background, you could be eligible for host of other scholarships and bursaries.
