Work out better!

What makes for an ideal exercise? Would it be running for the treadmill for hours? Lifting weights perhaps?

The answer is both. And neither is more or less important than the other.

As gym-goers, we’ve all been there. Lifting weights, squats and plank are just too hard and it’d be so much nicer if we could just do without these. However, research at Solent University in the UK shows that we shouldn’t be slacking.

Experts have reviewed experimental data and have found muscle strengthening exercise to be just as essential to physical and mental wellbeing as aerobic exercise is. This type of exercise helps delay the natural decline in muscle mass and bone density that starts from around age 50 and reduces the risk of various chronic diseases like diabetes, coronary heart disease, etc.

The conclusions of these experts have resulted in a change in official medical advice given by the government and public hospitals. Under the new guidelines, adults are advised to undertake strength-based exercise at least 2 days a week.

Solent University is one of the leading universities in the UK. It has been rated Silver by the UK government for its teaching quality, facilities and the success of its graduates. This year it has even been shortlisted for the University of the Year in the Times Higher Education Awards, the most prestigious in the sector. These awards are often described as the ‘Oscars of Higher Education’ these awards recognise the outstanding work going on in universities throughout the UK.
