Hi,
We are fine here. We often here about the incidents, all these happen only if we intervene and shoe, the only difference is that we come to know about these things when someone from our own place is involved in something like this. most of our students here work at night times, I myself due to job travel alone at night times....but Never faced any problems....I am not saying that incidents never happen, but if people take care, and do not go searching for trouble, it is never an issue. all the issues occuring also involved some kind of argument from the side of the people affected. some Indian students(not to offend anyone personally) are raising arguments with lebanese people which inturn is affecting people who never were involved in anything. these guys targeted all the indians in common. now everything is settling down and going well.government is taking measures for our safety and police are conducting safety meets in colleges to raise awareness. as u know like USA, Australia is full of oppurtunities, but with everything good there is always 1% risk involved.
How are you doing? Thanks for your concern. Here I am doing good, I completed my 1st semester and my 2nd semester also came to an end. So I have been busy with assignments and work. Yeah daily I am talking to my parents through skype and I am staying with one of my brother in laws friend from U.S., So there is no problem with my accommodation. How is Prashant? Convey my hello to him. Anyways I will be in touch and update my progress to you.
Take care

Hi Suman,
I am doing good Second semester exams are going on. Regarding the safety in Australia, What u really heard in the media is completely wrong. Media is focusing on the bad events. Incidents occur anywhere in the world. Even in India also many incidents occur in everyday life it doesn’t mean that India is not the safest place to live! In the same way is Australia. So what I can say is Australia is the safest place than U.S.A, Canada, U.K. Here the government takes very good care about the people & their safety .You know in the Shravan kumar case( he is one of my friends friend ) the mistake is on both sides (Shravan and Aussie) So we have to be careful, Possess good sense of humor in dealing with people rather than fighting or scared.
Take care

Well situation is not so bad as it was before one&half - two months ago, now I think there is no problem in melbourne becouse govenment has taken some serious steps against those who is creating such kind of situation. but here some indian students are also responsible for this as they go out and misbehave with others specialy who don't have any job or any work to do, they do such kind of things. now there is no such kind of problem and I will strongly recommend all student who are coming here that they should not misbehave or fight with any one.
It was wonderful to hear from you. Firstly I'd like to apologize for the late reply. I Hope you're doing good. Like to thank you again for all the help in getting us both here. Will definitely let anyone know about you if they are interested in going abroad to study.
Well I'm sure everyone in India is aware of the highly publicized attacks on Indian students. The truth is this. I and most of my other friends from India were unaware of these happenings until we were told about the same by our parents. The Australian Press is highly biased and not much publicity was given to the attacks as it would be a serious dent to the inflow of foreign students to Australia. However there was really no reason to publicize the events so much as was done by the Indian Media. Citizens are not safe in their own country. So foreigners are obviously more susceptible to danger. A number of the attacks were over-exaggerated and the fault was on both parties in most instances. Also these attacks and fights are rather commonplace and not so unusual.
I go out clubbing once in a while (actually rather often) and I know how violent people can get here. The best thing really is to go around in a large group and keep to oneself. The Indian students generally tend to put on a false facade and and act like they own the place. These are really my views on the current situation.
Now to answer your questions :
- Due to the overwhelming publicity give to the events the situation here has changed a bit. Initially things were really laid back and everyone felt rather comfortable. But after these events there is an air of uneasiness around Indian students. Initially I would not be worried to take the train at night, but now I would think twice about it and would rather travel by bus or take a cab. When I see a group of people that are known to cause trouble ( Aboriginals, Blacks and Teenagers ) I stay away and try to avoid any
confrontation. Traveling alone at night is not as safe as it was( Traveling alone makes you a soft target ). This again is more of a
gut feeling more than anything. So far however Perth has not had any major incidents and I hope things stay peaceful.
- The number of part time jobs available has decreased due to the current financial condition. Having good contacts and well
connected friends is very important to get a job. Being outspoken and well versed in English is also very important. During my
time here I have been working in an exclusive restaurant and earn about $350 a week. But more importantly I have made a
number of friends and connections so when the holidays come along it's rather easy for me to get more work. Being likable is
also very important. So finding a job is not too easy but it really depends from person to person. After finally getting a job you
could expect about $150 a week initially.
- As advice to students looking at coming to Australia to study I would say, it's a good choice but really you have to be more
focused on University than trying to work. Doing well in University is an absolute necessity and is the primary objective all else is
secondary.Being friendly and focused is important. Try not to work late night jobs and preferably try not to travel alone. Avoid any confrontations and really everything else should be just fine.
Australia's a beautiful place to study and these unforeseen events do happen in every country. I'm sure Australia's safer than India.
Well these are my views on the current situation Ashwini. I hope this helps you out in painting the real picture and once again I apologize for the late reply.
Do let me know if you would like any other information.
