Cloud Computing

Studying Cloud Computing

Do you use Dropbox or Google Drive? Then you probably know what I mean when I refer to cloud computing. Cloud computing is an IT practice of using remote servers to host, process data and applications, in place of local servers and processors.

The advantages of this are manifold. Firstly, customers of a streaming service say, Netflix, can access their favourite programmes from multiple servers. This drastically lowers buffer speeds and increases network capacity. This is also a strategy for minimising risks for companies because this way not all of their data will be in one place, making them less vulnerable to cyber attacks and technical failures. Finally, backing up files on cloud enables users to work any device, anywhere, anytime.

Studying cloud computing will teach how to build, operate and troubleshoot cloud computing infrastructure.

Several courses require you complete an internship alongside studies. This is a great chance to gain relevant work experience and build a professional network in Ireland.

Some of the most sought after universities and colleges in Dublin are:

  • Dublin City University
  • Griffith College Dublin
  • Dublin Business School
  • National college of Ireland

Salary and Career Prospects

Cloud computing professionals are hired by online retail companies (Amazon, eBay), IT and tech (Cisco, IBM), retail and hospitality companies (Marriott, Tesco) and banks (Bank of Ireland, Bank of America Merrill Lynch).

Some of the roles they take up are Technical Solutions Architect, Cloud Application Developer, IT Cloud Infrastructure Architect and Cloud Support Engineer.

Salaries vary based on experience, qualifications, skills and location. As a guide, cloud computing professionals earn around €34,000 a year (27 lakhs INR).
