Electric Power Engineering

Studying Electric Power Engineering

Electrical power engineering is a sub-discipline of electrical and electronic engineering. It deals with the generation, transmission and distribution of electric power.

Far from being all about cables and power plants, electric power engineering finds application in a wide range of other sectors. These include transport sector (train, ship and aeroplane building), defence (building missiles, drones) and renewable energy (wind power, solar, nuclear and hydroelectricity).

The UK is at the forefront of electrical power engineering teaching, learning and research. There are about 19 universities offering study programmes in this subject area.

Some of universities where you could study electric power engineering are:

  • Liverpool John Moores Engineering
  • Northumbria University
  • Teesside University
  • University of Greenwich

Salary and Career Prospects

There is a severe shortage of engineers who specialise in electric power engineering. Suitably qualified engineers are hired by electricity and power companies and power plants (EDF, British Gas), utilities (United Utilities), transport companies (Airbus, BMW, and Jaguar), IT companies (Microsoft, IBM, and Samsung), manufacturing (Mars, Unilever) and government departments.

Some of roles graduates take up are: Electric Power Plant Engineer, Electric Power Engineer, Power Engineer, Electrical Power Assistance Steering Engineer, Power Systems Engineer and Power Electronics Engineer.

Salaries can vary depending on location, qualifications and experience. As a guide, electric power engineers in the UK take home about£42,000 (around 40 lakhs INR) a year.

Why Study in UK?

The UK is a world-renowned seat of learning, teaching and research with 3 universities in top 10 and 7 in top 50 in THE World Rankings 2018.

British government is investing heavily in major engineering projects like HS2, Cross rail (rail projects) and Hinkley Point (nuclear power plants).

Britain is home to some of world’s most prestigious engineering and technology companies like Rolls-Royce, Airbus, Siemens, Apple and Dyson.

It is possible for students to remain in the country after finishing their studies, provided they meet prevailing visa requirements.
